Training includes boat handling, basic navigation, rope handling, towage, marine radio operation, search and rescue and a host of other maritime skills. As you complete the levels of training and gain skills you can move up the ladder as far as marine rescue skipper if desired and of course have the ability. Crew members share all duties on the vessel including time at the helm. You will learn to drive a marine rescue boat.

To allow for timely arrival at the vessel for an after hours callout, it is preferred applicants live with 20 minutes of Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Requirements

  • Driver's Licence (C)
  • National Police Certificate *

The National Police check is arranged by DFES at no cost after joining.
An applicant should have good vision (glasses are OK) and have good colour vision

    Boat and radio crews operate on a monthly roster. You would be allocated to a boat squad and be on roster a minimum of one day per month. Additional days are available if required. One half day per month would be spent in our radio tower with coms to boaties. Undertaking some free DFES certification courses is required. The number of courses is dependant on the crew level you wish to attain. Training is generally on our vessels or in our HQ.
